Finding God

Your journey to knowing the One who made you begins here

You're probably reading this because you want to know how to know God. You may have questions like:

    Is God real?
Is it possible to know Him?
    What is He like?
    Is it safe?
Will He want to know me?
What about other religions and spiritualities?

This page is here to help you find God and know Him. If you want to explore other questions further, please email us and we will reply when we can, or try a local course like Alpha or something similar.

But if you already feel there probably is a God, and you want to know how to know Him, here is a brief explanation.

    Who God Is

God is outside of time. He has no beginning or end. God is love. All goodness, wisdom, kindness, knowledge, and creativity come from Him.

He created everything we see and experience—time, matter, the universe, and us. He made us for a loving relationship with Himself. He designed us to function connected to Him, like an appliance works when it is connected to power.

He gave us free will so that we could choose to love Him, because love is only real when it is freely chosen. He designed us to live according to His guidance because He knows more than we do, and always will. Living His way is wisdom.

    Why We Feel Disconnected

Exactly how it happened is a longer story, but humans chose to live independently of God. Some people also try to use religious acts or symbols like lucky charms instead of trusting Him.

This caused separation between us and God. It leaves us feeling disconnected and purposeless, and it affects our thinking so we don't realise that it's God who is missing. We try to fill the emptiness with other things, which only damages us further.

We are designed to depend on God, but we cannot restore the connection ourselves, even if the things we try seem spiritual.

    What God Did for Us

God loves us and came Himself to repair the damage.

Imagine a glass of pure spring water. If someone drops sewage into it, you wouldn't drink it, even if they added lots of clean water afterward. But if the water is purified, it becomes drinkable again. Like the water, we need purifying for the wrong we have done—to God, to ourselves, and to others—by living without His wisdom.

We get our sense of justice from God. No amount of good deeds can remove guilt; a penalty or punishment is required to bring justice.

So God came Himself. He entered the world through the womb of a virgin, was born as a child, grew up as a man called Jesus, lived without sin, and willingly allowed Himself to be killed as a substitute for you, me, and the whole world.

By doing this, Jesus became a gate—a way back into relationship with Himself. A way to be reconciled.

It may sound strange or too good to be true, but many have discovered it is real through life-changing experiences when they take Him at His word and trust Him.

    Ready for Reconciliation?

Here is a prayer you can say to God. If you truly mean it with all your heart, you will begin a new life, with God as your loving Father, friend, and counsellor:

"God, I am truly sorry for leading my life without you, and for all the things I have said, thought, and done that weren't good. Thank you for sending Jesus. Thank you for coming as a man and dying in my place, so that I can be forgiven and made clean. Thank you for paying off my debt to you. I choose to accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Please forgive me and make me clean. Please come and live in me. Give me the ability to see things as you do and to live your way. I hand my life over to you and want to begin afresh with you in the lead. Amen."

    If You Prayed That Prayer

Congratulations! You have become a new person—forgiven, clean, reconciled to God, and empowered by His Spirit in you.

You will start to see things differently, and we would love to hear about it and the changes you notice.

You won't become perfect overnight, but God sees you as forgiven and innocent in His sight. He has exchanged your guilt for Jesus' clean record. Day by day, He will show you changes you can choose to make, and give you the supernatural power and desire to make them.

    We encourage you to:

    Read the Bible

Start with Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. Whenever you read, ask God to show you more of Himself and His ways, and simply let Him show you what He wants you to see. Read it in relationship with Him.
